QR Movie Review: The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Lego movie 2 is the follow up to the star studded 2014 hit original. This blocky sequel had a lot to live up to with the first film being a genuinely great comedy for all ages and a surprisingly huge commercial success.

The sequel follows Emmett (Chris Pratt) who after saving the Lego world from the evil Lord Business  (Will Ferrell) in the first film now lives with the other denizens in a mad max esque world at the mercy of evil Duplo monsters. After the Duplo villains kidnap his friends, Emmett sets out to save his friends and learn how to grow up under the tutelage of Rex Dangervest (Pratt).

While on paper, the plot sounds like any other kids film but as with the original it is the strong cast, witty jokes and deluge of cameos which add the flavour to this film for all cinema-goers. The main cast includes the original heroes Emmett (Pratt), Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), Metal Beard (Nick Offerman), Unikitty (Alison Brie) & Benny (Charlie Day). As well as this Tiffany Haddish & Stephanie Beatriz join the cast as the antagonists of the film.

As with the original the film relishes in its deep pool of cameos, these range from Aquaman & Velma to Bruce Willis & Ruth Bader Ginsburg all backed up by a star studded voice cast. While the cameos don’t pack the same surprise as the original they certainly maintain the strong quality from the first.

Not content with its strong humour and cast the Lego movie 2 is also in some ways a musical, featuring a selection of excellent and witty songs including a remix of the first film’s earworm everything is Awesome and some especially funny songs from Arnett’s Batman & Haddish’s villain.

As a whole The Lego Movie 2 is a strong sequel which maintains the strong standard set by the original film’s humour, characters and music. Despite this there is some intangible quality missing when compared to the original, the film certainly has a very genuine heart and good nature but just not in the same special way the first film did. While the first film was a surprise this film is expectedly strong and this may actually be too its detriment.

As good as any sequel to the surprise original could be, this is certainly fun for all ages but lacks that special spark of the first film.

4/5
