QR Theatre Review: GOH Pantomine 'Jack and the Beanstalk'

This years Christmas pantomime production at the Grand Opera House is ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’  and it did not disappoint, the play is packed full of laughs for all ages with quirky segments scattered throughout the show to entertain and break up the actual teling of the story.

The show literally flosses its way into the 21st century, giving the audience an alternative interpretation of the children’s classic tale, which is guaranteed to keep the children in attendance entertained throughout with additions from ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack and a special appearance from The Belfast Roller Rollers.

May Mcfetridge steals the shows as always, in her role as Dame May Trot, hailed as ‘the glorious queen of comedy’ its easy to see why as her hilarious performance had the audience as well as the cast in fits of laughter.

The playful chemistry of the cast on-stage flows into the audiences with playful interactions, helping to maintain an energetic pace with colourful performances from David Bedella and Rikki Jay really engaging with the audience watching the show.

Beyond the great performances of the cast, the creative team behind Jack and the Beanstalk provide a visual delight which perfectly complements the performances of the cast and reflects the jovial and fun nature of the play.

Special mention goes to Mike Coltman for speciality costumes as the inclusion of puppetry in the performance really tied the piece together, watching the impressively large giants move around the stage was mesmerising and a true work of art

The end of act one provided a particular highpoint to look out for, but overall, Jack and the Beanstalk is filled with a number of hilarious and entertaining moments and all round fantastic performances from a stellar cast that I could not recommend you treat yourself to this festive season enough.

Jack and the Beanstalk is running from Saturday the 1st December 2018 - Sunday the 13th January 2019
