QR Film Review: Emma

Pompous, romantic, predictable and the perfect period rom-com. Don’t be put off by the idea of another classic novel being rerun to ‘fit a modern audience,’ this beautifully produced film practically mocks its own history. I don’t believe you could be disappointed by any film that hosts stars from Sex Education, The Crown, Game of Thrones and Sherlock alongside Miranda Hart and Bill Nighey. All kitted out in stiff collars and bonnets, it was a difficulty getting through each scene without gasping at the appearance of another well known face.

With no prior knowledge of Emma I assumed I’d be met by stuffy characters that should have remained in the 1800s. It really was surprising therefore that instead this film is laced with hilarious scenes of comedy gold. Only Bill Nighey could make a cinema burst out laughing with the single word ‘draft!’. The playful interactions between courting couples and their miscommunication and failed attempts at flirtation share so much with modern dating. Scenes of highly sensual eye contact, fiercely attractive horse riding and possibly the most passionate ballroom dance scene since Dirty Dancing all hook you into this romantic world. And if that wasn’t enough, imagine the summer view from a freshly cleaned window and you’re coming close to the clarity and saturated colour this cinematography brings with it.

Autumn De Wilde’s directing would surely make Jane Austen herself proud to still be reaching audiences in the 21st century. If the touching comments on friendship, family and love don’t have you running to the cinema, watch Emma instead for Johnny Flynn’s restyling as the newest hunk to grace the big screen.
