QR Film Review: Last Christmas
Last Christmas was the perfect start to the festive period and is guaranteed to leave you feeling all fuzzy on the inside.
While it may seem the perfect Christmas rom-com to start the festive season, it is so much more than that. It is a love letter to family and a reminder to be grateful for our loved ones.
While some have argued that the tragic twist in the narrative is predictable I would counter that it is not necessary to be shocked by this film. It works so well because of the simplicity of it allowing you to become absorbed into the surrealism of the protagonist’s state of mind.
Emilia Clarke plays the chaotic Catarina and honestly it was a joy to watch her develop and heal as the film unfolded. She was an incredibly human character which just made the film all the more charming.
Aside from the excellent chemistry between Clarke and Tom (Henry Golding) which effectively combatted some of the cringes rom-com trips that can make these films sickly sweet. Last Christmas was a breath of fresh air with the focus also falling onto some of Catarina’s other relationships i.e. with her mother and her friends. Allowing her character to become a little more complex which I found incredibly interesting.
This film make me cry, laugh and gave me hope. It’s simple yet powerful and honestly a lovely film to begin the festive period with I can’t recommend it enough.
4/5 Stars.
